What Is Steel Shot?
The hardness range of the product is 40 - 60 HRC., which is similar to the hardness of grit. This shot is used in a wide variety of processes, with its primary use being called shot peening. Shot peening strengthens the surface of a product by repeatedly hitting it with steel shot. This repeated hitting compresses the metal, increasing its strength. Some of the most common applications for this effect known as shot peening are in the manufacture of gear parts, springs, turbine blades, and camshafts. Other application areas that involve the use of this shot besides shot peening include those that require maximum energy transfer levels to effectively produce a good surface profile. This includes applications such as concrete surfacing, rubber buildup removal, and epoxy and adhesive removal. Just like grit, these shots have a lot of uses before they need to be replaced, typically allowing for about 2400-3000 cycles depending on the application these blasting techniques are being used for, and assuming the professional uses ideal blasting media recovery equipment. Steel shot comes in a wide range of sizes, ranging between s 110 – s 930. The larger the number of shot here compared to grit, the larger the size of the steel shot, meaning a s 930 size shot will be larger than an s 110. Larger shot is used for removing thicker coatings and heavier steel peening.

Types of Steel Shot
Spherical steel shot
This is the most common type of steel shot. It is perfectly spherical, providing uniform impact and coverage when used in applications like abrasive blasting and shot peening.
Cut wire shot
Cut wire shot is made by cutting steel wire into short lengths and then rounding the edges to create small, irregularly shaped pellets. It is often used for shot peening and surface preparation. Its irregular shape can create more intense surface compressive stresses compared to a spherical shot.
Conditioned steel shot
Conditioned steel shot undergoes a conditioning process that includes heat treatment to improve its hardness and durability. This type of shot is used in applications where consistent hardness and long-lasting abrasiveness are critical.
Stainless steel shot
While not strictly “steel,” stainless steel shot is used for similar purposes as steel shot, but it offers corrosion resistance. It's often used in applications where rust contamination is a concern, such as in the food industry and some specific blasting applications.
High carbon steel shot
High carbon steel shot is known for its high hardness and durability. It's used in applications where aggressive abrasion is required, such as in shot-blasting hardened steel surfaces.
Low carbon steel shot
Low carbon steel shot is softer than high carbon steel shot. It is often used for less aggressive applications, like shot peening, where the objective is to strengthen the material rather than remove surface contaminants.
Cast steel shot
Cast steel shot is made by melting steel and pouring it into molds to create shot pellets. It is known for its hardness and uniformity, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, including shot blasting and shot peening.
Chilled iron shot
Chilled iron shot is made from cast iron that has been heat-treated to improve its hardness and wear resistance. It's used in applications requiring intense abrasion, such as cleaning tough surfaces and preparing them for coatings.
Zinc-plated steel shot
Zinc-plated steel shot is coated with a layer of zinc, providing some corrosion resistance. This type is used in applications where rust contamination must be minimized.
Application of Steel Shot
Abrasive blasting
Steel shots are frequently used in abrasive blasting operations to clean and prepare metal surfaces. Blasting involves propelling steel shots at high velocities onto the surface to be treated.
This process removes rust, scale, corrosion, paint, and other contaminants, leaving a clean and properly prepared surface. It is widely employed in industries such as shipbuilding, automotive manufacturing, and construction for surface preparation before painting or coating.
Shot peening
Shot peening is a cold working process that involves bombarding the surface of a metal component with steel shots. This induces compressive residual stresses in the material, enhancing its mechanical properties, including fatigue resistance and strength. Shot peening is commonly used in aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing industries to improve the durability and performance of critical components.
Deburring and descaling
Steel shots are used to remove burrs, sharp edges, and scale from metal parts. This is important in industries like manufacturing and machining, where precision and smooth surfaces are required for proper functioning and assembly.
Surface texturing
In some applications, steel shots are used to create specific surface textures or patterns on metal surfaces. This can enhance grip, adhesion, or aesthetic appeal. This is often seen in architectural applications and decorative metalwork.
Preparation for coatings
Steel shots are an effective means of preparing metal surfaces for various coatings, including paint, powder coating, and thermal spray. Properly prepared surfaces ensure better adhesion and longer-lasting coatings.
Cleaning and decontamination
Steel shots are used for cleaning and decontaminating surfaces in industries like nuclear power, where maintaining a clean and contaminant-free environment is critical for safety.
Removal of heat treat scale
After heat treatment processes like quenching or annealing, metal parts can develop scale or oxidation layers. Steel shots are used to remove these layers and restore the surface's quality.
Metal surface enhancement
Steel shots can also be used to enhance the appearance and properties of metal surfaces for decorative or functional purposes. For example, they are used in producing decorative patterns on metal surfaces or creating a matte finish.
Tumbling and finishing
In metal finishing processes, steel shots are used in tumbling machines to achieve smooth and polished surfaces on small metal parts and components.
Raw materials
The primary raw material for steel shots is steel. This steel can be sourced from various places, including scrap steel, which is often recycled. The type and quality of steel used can vary depending on the desired characteristics of the final product.
Melting
The steel is melted in a furnace to create a molten metal. The temperature and composition of the molten steel are closely monitored to ensure consistency and quality.
Atomization
The molten steel is then subjected to a process called atomization. In this process, the molten steel is forced through a nozzle at high pressure or dropped from a height. As the steel emerges from the nozzle or falls, it is exposed to a jet of high-pressure water or air. This causes the molten steel to break into small droplets.
Solidification
As the small molten droplets are exposed to the cooling effects of air or water, they rapidly solidify into small spherical shapes. These solidified spheres are now the steel shots.

Sizing and screening
The newly formed steel shots are not all of the same size. They are typically larger than the desired final size. To achieve the desired size distribution, the steel shots are passed through a series of screens or sieves. The screens allow smaller shots to pass through while retaining larger ones. The shots that do not meet the size specifications are recycled back into the process.
Heat treatment
Depending on the specific requirements of the application, the steel shots may undergo a heat treatment process to enhance their hardness and durability. Heat treatment can involve heating the shots to a specific temperature and then rapidly cooling them (quenching) to achieve the desired properties.
Quality control
Throughout the manufacturing process, quality control measures are in place to ensure that the steel shots meet the required standards for hardness, size, and shape. Shots that do not meet these standards are removed from the production line.
Packaging
Once the steel shots have been manufactured and meet the quality standards, they are packaged in bags, drums, or other suitable containers for distribution and sale.
How to Choose a Steel Shot
Size
The size of the steel shot particles will determine the aggressiveness of the shot blasting process. Smaller particles are less aggressive, while larger particles are more aggressive. It is important to choose the right size for the specific application.
Hardness
The hardness of the steel shot particles will also impact the effectiveness of the shot blasting process. Harder particles are more effective at removing hard coatings or materials, but they can also cause more wear and tear on the equipment and create more dust.
