Steel shot is a key consumable for shot blasting and workpiece strengthening. Its quality directly affects efficiency, service life and surface treatment results. You can quickly judge its quality by appearance, hardness, composition and durability.
High-quality steel shot is regular in shape, highly round, uniform in size, with a smooth surface free of burrs or cracks, and an even dark gray metallic luster. Poor-quality steel shot is often irregular, flat, hollow, dusty and impure, with poor fluidity.
Hardness is critical. Qualified steel shot usually has a hardness of HRC 40–50, with balanced hardness and toughness. It does not break easily under impact and ensures stable cleaning performance. Over-hard shot fractures quickly with high wear; over-soft shot is inefficient at rust removal and may cause uneven scratches.
Chemical composition determines durability. Premium steel shot has moderate carbon content, proper silicon and manganese ratios, and extremely low sulfur and phosphorus impurities, with a dense microstructure and qualified density. Inferior steel shot contains excessive impurities and loose structure, which easily turns to powder during use, causing heavy dust pollution and rapid consumption.
A simple on-site test works well: tap a few pellets against a steel plate. Good steel shot makes a clear sound and bounces well; gently hit it with a hammer, and it deforms rather than shatters. In actual use, high-quality steel shot has a long service life, low dust and uniform cleaning effect, while poor-quality shot produces a lot of fragments, requires frequent replacement and raises overall costs.
When purchasing, choose products from formal manufacturers with national standard inspection reports. Prioritize roundness, suitable hardness and purity to reduce costs and ensure stable surface treatment quality.
